Understanding the Service Mode

Service Mode is a diagnostic tool used to access fault codes and perform tests on various components of your GE refrigerator. This can be helpful when troubleshooting issues or determining which parts may be faulty.

Entering Service Mode on Your GE Refrigerator

First Locate Your Tech Sheet

Before entering Service Mode, find your refrigerator’s tech sheet. This document often contains information about specific error codes and test procedures.

Entering Service Mode on Your GE Refrigerator

The exact button combination to enter Service Mode may vary slightly depending on your refrigerator model. However, here are some common methods:

  • For water and ice dispenser units: Hold the “Water,” “Crushed,” and “Cubed” buttons simultaneously.
  • For autofill units: Hold the “Water,” “Ice,” and “Autofill” buttons.
  • For K-Cup units: Hold the “Water,” “Ice,” and “Light” buttons.
  • For non-dispenser units: Hold the “Ice Maker” and “Lock” controls.

Once in Service Mode, the freezer and fresh food displays will likely show “TE CH” followed by “00.”

Navigating Service Mode

  • To toggle between testing options: Press the “Fridge” button to go up and the “Door Alarm” button to go down.
  • To execute a test: Press any key (except the up and down buttons) when you’ve selected the desired test.

Example Tests

  • Test 14: Initiates a defrost cycle in both the fresh food and freezer compartments.
  • Test 48: Turns on the freezer evaporator fan motor.

Viewing Error Codes

To view any existing error codes, execute test “00 00.” If a code appears, consult your tech sheet for its meaning. For example, error code “0003” might indicate a faulty freezer thermistor.

Exiting Service Mode

To exit Service Mode, navigate to test “16” and press any button except the up and down keys.

Remember: Always consult your refrigerator’s service manual or tech sheet for specific instructions and safety guidelines. If you’re unsure about any procedures or encounter persistent problems, it’s best to contact a qualified technician.
